Sport Lapping Session With Coaching

You learn driving concepts in the classroom, but you gain driving skills on the track. Here’s how to take your High Performance Driving Experience skills to the next level.

The road to driving expertise is a journey of many laps. Once the One-Day High Performance Driving Experience is completed, ProFormance Racing School offers drivers frequent High Performance Sport Lapping sessions providing the valuable track time they need to continue their skill development.

First Session: Coaching Required

Instructor at ProFomrance Racing School talking to a driver

In order to take advantage of these lapping sessions, ProFormance requires all One-Day High Performance Driving Experience graduates to begin their first lapping session with 45 minutes of private coaching, in order to ensure that they are ready to lap on Pacific Raceways by themselves.

We make lapping sessions with coaching available to drivers regularly. The sessions are typically Wednesday through Sunday. Each session has a limited car count to provide drivers with the best possible experience.

NOTE: We recommend you take your Lapping Session with Coaching as soon as possible after your One-Day High Performance Driving Experience, while the concepts you learned are still fresh in your mind.

Requirements for All Lapping Sessions with Coaching

Your required coaching session can take place during various lapping events that we hold, based on your schedule: you will find All-Day High Performance Sport Lapping with Coaching, AM High Performance Sport Lapping with Coaching or PM High Performance Sport Lapping with Coaching on our calendar. Choose any of these to fulfill your requirement. Successful completion of your coaching session qualifies you for a ProFormance Solo Sport Driving License*, recognizing you as a qualified participant in solo lapping at Pacific Raceways.

Note: as with the One Day High Performance Driving Experience, participants must ensure that their car is in proper mechanical condition for lapping. Check the list below for requirements.

Helmets

All drivers participating in the Sport Lapping Session with Coaching will be provided a helmet with a Snell SA2020 certification free of charge. For subsequent solo lapping sessions, helmets can be provided for a $30/day charge.

What to Expect at your First Lapping Session

There’s no need to be nervous about going from the One-Day High Performance Driving Experience to lapping. You’ll be guided by ProFormance Racing School professionals every step of the way.

  • Before your first lapping session, you’ll receive an email with links to two videos to help prepare you. They are optional viewing but recommended. You’ll also receive a Guide to Obtaining Your Solo Sport Driving License (feel free to download/view these now).
  • On the day of your lapping session, you’ll be fitted for a helmet, and will receive a Driver’s Logbook to record your driving progress and pointers from your instructor. The logbook is a working instrument that you should keep in your car so you can track your progress.
  • You’ll begin with a drivers’ meeting and will then have 45 minutes of instruction with your coach on the track.
  • After that, you’ll be driving solo, but you’ll be under observation by both your instructor and track turn marshals.
  • If you receive a satisfactory report from your coach, you’ll receive your Solo Sport Driving License*, allowing you to attend lapping sessions at Pacific Raceways as a solo driver.

Many participants will fulfill the requirements for a Solo Sport Driving License* at the end of the session. However, some will require more coaching.

Mandatory Drivers’ Meeting

There is a drivers’ meeting before every lapping session at ProFormance. These points will be covered at the meeting:

  • No ride giving — this is an insurance issue. The rule is in place to manage your risk and legal exposure.
  • Remember this is sport driving at 7/10ths – not full-on racing!
  • Entry to and exit from the track will be discussed.
  • Passing on the front straightaway permitted only at the indication of the instructor or lapping driver. Driver guidelines and let by zones will be discussed.
  • If there are new guidelines relevant to that particular day’s session, ProFormance staff will review those at the meeting.

Your 45-minute Coaching Session: A Quick Summary

After your Drivers’ Meeting, you and your driver coach will spend 45 minutes together in the car: you in the driver’s seat, and your coach supporting you. Your rearview mirror, which was taken away during the HPDE, is returned to you: you’re now in control of traffic, overtaking, and being overtaken using the protocols described in the Drivers’ Meeting. During the session, your coach will refresh your memory of the driving line and the high-performance driving techniques that you encountered in your original High-Performance Driving Experience.

‘When your 45 minutes is up, your coach will exit the car and will radio the entire racetrack staff that you are making your first solo presentation to the track. For the balance of the day you’ll be under observation, with the staff making sure that you’re in compliance, not struggling, and of course, having fun.

At day’s end, your coach presents to our Chief Instructor a written and verbal report regarding your time on track. If your report is satisfactory, you’ll be issued your Solo Sport Driving License,* allowing you to participate in lapping sessions at Pacific Raceways as a solo driver.

Once You Qualify for a Solo Sport Driving License

You can choose how often you prefer to drive after receiving your Solo Sport Driving License* from ProFormance. Keep in mind, though, that you must remember to sign up for a Solo Sport Lapping Session at least once a year to keep your license valid.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it rains on my scheduled date?

Rain is a great learning environment, and the school operates rain or shine. Clients are always amazed at how much they learn in the wet and how much fun they have.

Will I be safe at ProFormance? Will my car get damaged?

At ProFormance safety is our top priority. ProFormance instructors are committed to your fun, learning, and SAFE experience while with us. Failure is not an option. In our 31 year history conducting curriculum for thousands of drivers, we have never had two cars contact each other.

What are your age requirements?

Our young students must be 15.5 years of age with a valid state learner’s permit. Ideally, 3 – 6 months of driving experience will benefit their learning experience. ProFormance does not conduct a curriculum in basic motor vehicle operation – our focus is developing skill sets in Advanced Car Control and Street Survival.

Do I need a helmet?

ProFormance provides helmets free of charge for drivers taking the One-Day High Performance Driving Experience, and for the Sport Lapping Session with Coaching (the first step after the HPDE). For subsequent Solo Sport Lapping Sessions, drivers must wear a helmet with a Snell SA2020 certification. If you do not own one, ProFormance can provide them for a $30/day charge. They are the latest Snell-approved helmets, open-faced and wired for radio transmission between you and your instructor. When you decide this sport is something you want to do regularly, we’ll steer you to knowledgeable companies who can assist you in obtaining safety equipment for you and your car.

All-Day High Performance Sport Lapping Session with Coaching

While there are various sessions offering the 45-minute coaching session required for obtaining a Solo Sport Driving License, one of the most popular sessions are the All-Day High Performance Sport Lapping Sessions, which combine on-track experience with brief classroom breakout sessions (turn studies, braking techniques, and more will be discussed based on the group’s suggestions) to provide a productive learning environment.

When ProFormance holds All-Day High Performance Sport Lapping Sessions, drivers are divided into intermediate and advanced groups, based on skill level and car capability. This provides a better experience for the drivers in each category. Drivers participating in High Performance Sport Lapping with Coaching will automatically go into the Intermediate group.

Your Sport Driving Journey at ProFormance

Step 1: One-Day High Performance Driving Experience
Step 2: Lapping Session with Coaching
Step 3: Solo Sport Lapping Sessions
Step 4: Race Licensing

Insurance: Often clients ask us if their auto insurance covers their activities at ProFormance. The best approach is to read your policy. You will probably find a section that deals with training and events conducted at a racing facility. Please note that ProFormance events are non-timed and considered advanced driver education. Check your specific policy for details. Additional options for on track coverage are Hagerty, Lockton Affinity or On-Track.

Cancellations: We require 8 days’ notice of cancellation. Failure to notify our office, either text or email, prior to 8 days of your reserved school date will result in forfeiture of your tuition. Payment in full required 8 days prior to the clinic. No refunds, credits, or exchanges are given for cancellation less than 8 days from scheduled date with full 100% tuition due. No refunds or credit due to mechanical or weather day of event. Prices subject to change without notice. Sorry, but some restrictions may apply.

This is not competition driving, this is a high-speed driving school, on a racetrack, under close supervision by instructors. While the overriding consideration during the operation of the event is safety, incidents may occur that could cause vehicle damage and/or personal injury. You will be driving in a class session with other students and instructors whose vehicles may be uninsured and/or unregistered.

* NOTE: Your ProFormance Solo Sport Driving License is not a racing license. It permits you to participate in Solo Lapping Sessions at ProFormance Racing School. If you want to race, you need to take our Two-Day Accredited Competition Race Licensing course.
