The Art of Racing in the Rain

How Today’s Best-Loved Racing Story Began at ProFormance

Most people know The Art of Racing in the Rain as a bestselling 2008 novel by Garth Stein that made it to the screen in 2019. But the true genesis of the movie was an essay of the same name written Don Kitch Jr., ProFormance Racing School founder and Chief Instructor.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Author Garth Stein was a ProFormance student when he read Don’s essay and realized that some of the lessons in it applied to life as well as driving. His book passes on those lessons in the voice of a very remarkable dog named Enzo.

Most ProFormance clients have met the real Enzo, who belongs to Don and Donna Kitch, and who can be seen during classes weaving his way through the drivers, constantly making friends.
